Dad They Broke Me - Rot LP
This absolutely horrific slab of serial-killer noise-rock sludge is the third and sadly final release from this exemplary Australian quartet. "Rot" is a vile, deconstructed mess of unhinged rhythm slathered with a swathe of guitar shred, all topped off with what seems to be an animal barking, grunting and generally losing its shit. Songs vary in tempo from blurry speed to gut-churning crawl, and there’s a highly satisfying level of variety across the five tracks. The strange thing about a noise like this is that in order to sound so out of control, you actually need to be totally in control, and it’s testament to their talent that they keep you hooked throughout the onslaught. If you’re looking for touchstones, think of bands like Melvins, Swans, Godflesh, Unsane and Zeni Geva but with the noise turned up to about six hundred and sixty six. For me, this is most certainly a strong contender for the best album of 2010.
